Kine A week told you “The new robust ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled with a colourful assortment off essential and you will arresting characters, that, skilfully manipulated because of the blogger and you will manager, allow the film to tread liquids effortlessly. It is just on the end this starts to fall apart, nevertheless slap-right up finale rescues it about ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has zero higher difficulty from inside the life style down their incredibly ugly term.” [ 8 ]

The newest film’s journalist and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess game, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) did from the local casino and you can dated an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic software, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding like and hazard, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive pictures (and additionally his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet outlined spectacle a low profile vintage of style.” [ ten ]

Ace activities because of the Cock Powell, due to the fact a gaming domestic overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, because a police inspector, and additionally within the get . Whilst the area comes after a common development, the new characterizations was new while the activities suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and relevant, avoiding the psychological, phoney touching. Uncommon cam bases come-along now and then to help you heighten focus and you will briefly stop the eye. Strong teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling while the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand-new writer and you may member music producer, along with aids in making it a softer manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its mainly a point of enjoying Mr. Powell go through their paces fashionably if you’re a giant shed of actors and you may actresses promote your conventional help. Evelyn Keyes performs the favorable absolutely nothing woman who brings forth the fresh best in him and you may Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you may slinky vixen just who will get your to your jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy as villain and you will Lee J. Cobb does another type of ready trip as an exhausted cops inspector just who fundamentally closes the situation. Significant amounts of taking and you may smoking is accomplished by the the worried.” [ a dozen ]
